Rev Wilbert Awdry O.B.E. 1929

Website

Wilbert (1911-1997) was the creator of the popular and timeless classic, Thomas the Tank Engine.  The first book, The Three Railway Engines, was published in 1945, and by the time he stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books.  His son, Christopher, for whom the stories were originally told, later added 14 of his own to the collection

Carl (1908-2000) was a US Congressman and Speaker of the House of Representatives, 1971-76.

Mr Justice Edward Akufo Addo 1933

(1906-1979) Chief Justice and President, Republic of Ghana, 1969-72.

Sir Rex Masterman Hunt 1944

Rex was the British Governor of the Falkland Islands between 1980 and 1985.  He joined the Royal Air Force as a cadet in 1941 and he was enlisted as an airman in 1944. He was commissioned as a pilot the following year.   In 1952 he joined the Colonial and Diplomatic Services and went on to serve in postings in Uganda, Sarawak, Brunei, Turley, Indonesia, South Vietnam, Malaysia and, of course, the Falkland Islands.  He is vividly depicted in the BBC drama An Ungentlemanly Act which concerns the invasion of the Falklands.

Sir Ken Loach 1957

Top film director Ken Loach has had a very good year, winning the Academy Fellowship at the BAFTAS in May and then the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival for his film, The Wind that Shakes the Barley.  Spanning 40 years and nearly 60 films (comprising 17 theatrical features and numerous dramas and documentaries for television), Ken has one of contemporary cinema's most intriguing and thoughtful careers.

His finest films are at once explicitly political and yet humorous, powerfully emotional and yet very intellectual. Vincent Canby suggests that “Loach's movies may one day provide a more accurate record of a nation's collective unconscious than the work of any other single director”. 

Mr Christopher Matthew 1960

Christopher is a bestselling wit.  Apart from Now We Are Sixty, Christopher is best known for his Diary of a Somebody and its accident-prone hero Simon Crisp, whom Sheridan Morley called 'one of the greatest comic characters of our time'. He has been a columnist for most of the major newspapers, currently writes on books and TV for the Daily Mail, and is well known as a broadcaster.

Mr Peter Dale 1960

Peter is a published writer who was co-editor of the poetry journal `Agenda’ for many years. He is well- known for his translations from Dante, Jules Laforgue and François Villon, Dale is also an accomplished poet in his own right: Anvil published his new and selected poems, `Edge to Edge’ in 1996 and, more recently, `Under the Breath’ in 2002.

Paul became the youngest ever Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in 1993 aged just 45.

Major General Nick Houghton 1977

Nick is a Major General in the British Army.  He was recently promoted to Deputy Commanding General of the Multinational Force in Iraq. On his return from Iraq in April 2006, Nick became Chief of Joint Operations at the Permanent Joint Headquarters, Northwood.

Mr Kurt Jackson 1980

Kurt is one of Britain’s leading artists.  His work embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, relief work, print making and sculpture.  Kurt has had exhibitions all over the country, most recently in Edinburgh and Kew Gardens. 

Kurt’s paintings are set in places where he has travelled and explored regularly throughout his life and his work demonstrates a deep and rich understanding of natural history and ecology, politics and environmental issues.  His latest works can be viewed at Lemon Street Gallery in Truro; check out his website for details of current touring exhibitions.

Mr Matt Frei 1982

Matt has been the BBC's Washington correspondent since 2002. Prior to that he was the BBC's Asia correspondent based in Singapore, and in Hong Kong, having taken up his post just before the handover to China. Matt has won several awards including the Amnesty International Asia Award in 1997 and 1998 for his reports on Vietnam and Indonesia and a Royal Television Society International News Award for his reports of turmoil in East Timor.

Dr Daniel Zelikow 1983

Daniel Zelikow is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group.  The IDB is the world's largest regional development bank and the leading source of multilateral financing for Latin America and the Caribbean.  

Mr Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall 1984

Hugh is a celebrity chef.  He is noted for his mildly eccentric antics (he once flambéed and puréed a human placenta which was served as a pâté) and back-to-nature philosophy.  He has written best-selling cookery books, The River Cottage Cookbook, The River Cottage Year and The River Cottage Meat Book.

Richard is Asia Editor of The Times and author of In the Time of Madness, a non-fiction book about Indonesia and East Timor. In 2005 he was named Foreign Correspondent of the Year in the UK's What the Papers Say Awards.

Mr Orlando Seale 1991

Orlando is an all-round talented and successful actor.  His first encounter with feature films came when Kenneth Brannagh hand-picked him to serve as his acting understudy for Hamlet (1996). Roles in Sleepy Hollow, Pride & Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy, and Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story (2001) quickly followed.  His television appearances include The Ghost Whisperer, The West Wing and Casualty.  Professionally trained in Commedia dell'Arte, improvisation, mime, clowning, dancing, fencing and horseback riding, Orlando also speaks fluent French and has mastered a number of dialects. He currently teaches youth acting classes in Los Angeles and has plans to record an album.

Mr Hugh Dancy 1994

Hugh is one of the UK’s most upcoming young talents, having starred in a whole variety of films and BBC television dramas.  Hugh has starred in the BBC’s Daniel Deronda as well as the series Cold Feet, Trial and Retribution and Kavanagh QC.  In July of 2006 he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the USA for his role in Elizabeth I.  Hugh’s films include Black Hawk Down, King Arthur and the powerful recently released Shooting Dogs.

Mr Jamie Dalrymple 2000

Jamie is a first-rate cricketer.  He was picked in the England A Cricket squad for the spring 2006 tour of the West Indies and has recently played in the second Test against Pakistan, having been one of the few players to impress during a 5-0 NatWest Series defeat by Sri Lanka.  He is a genuine off-spinning all-rounder, first making an impression in a Varsity match whilst studying at St Peter’s in 2003, by scoring a double century, becoming only the third man to do so in a Varsity fixture, and followed it up with five first-innings wickets.

Jamie was named in the ECB National Academy Squad for winter 2005-06 and signed a long-term extension to his Middlesex contract, after taking 23 wickets and scoring 721 runs for the club.
