Pete Hoskins (1977) left Oxford in 1980 clear only that he didn’t want to do an atomic physics PhD and that he needed a job in the real world away from the refined atmosphere of Oxford. After a month working as a kitchen porter at the local hospital he drifted into Medical Physics where, for 4 years he was a trainee helping run a clinical service in medical imaging and vascular ultrasound. Pete moved to Edinburgh 22 years ago, initially to do a PhD, and is now a Reader in Medical Physics, still working on new diagnostic techniques for vascular disease, ever hopeful that his latest grant application will not be trashed and rejected. At home he has 2 children aged 11 and 7, 3 cats and a goldfish. The children chase each other round the house, and the cats chase each other around the garden. The family has a summer break every year in the same house in Norfolk with beach for the kids, decent beer and walks between Weybourne and Sheringham for the adults. At this stage the end of his career seems a lot closer than the beginning and he looks forward to a time when we can explore the English countryside without the never-ending demands of work. Pete would be very interested to hear from anyone that remembers him. Contact.
