Students chatting

St Peter’s takes its responsibility for the welfare of its students very seriously.  There is always someone on hand to whom they can turn for confidential advice on any matter whether of a personal, financial or medical nature.

The welfare team includes both senior and junior members of the College, who work closely with each other to ensure that an appropriate range of expertise and help is available. Matters of general concern are discussed at termly welfare meetings, to which the College Doctors (from the Jericho Health Centre), the College Nurse and a representative from the University Counselling Service are invited.  The students themselves organise a peer support group.

The College is aware of its obligations to extend accessibility for people with disabilities. We have introduced a number of structural and procedural measures; others are under active consideration. We are assembling and will publish a Disability Equality Scheme, taking into account the views of members, staff and visitors. Comments and suggestions are welcome and may either be addressed directly to the Tutor for Welfare or sent to the Bursar's Office by means of a downloadable survey form.

Henrietta Leyser, Tutor for Welfare, coordinates the College’s welfare provision. She has an open-door policy for students and is used to dealing with all kinds of problems and situations. Her room is Staircase IV, room 16 and she can be contacted by email or by telephone ((2)78892); the Lodge can give you her home number.

Laura Gilbert is the Junior Welfare Officer and Women's Advisor. She describes her role as follows:

"I work to improve the welfare of all students at St Peters. I am friendly, a good listener and my door is open if you want to chat about any problems or worries you might have, large or small, or just for when the pace of Oxford life gets a little out of hand. I keep a large range of chocolate and biscuits if you want to drop in on me in staircase IV, room 23 for tea. I can also point you in the direction of other sources of support if you feel you want it. In my spare time I'm a graduate particle physicist and a kickboxing instructor, and I sit on the university Student Health & Welfare and Health & Safety committees."

Henrietta Leyser is trained as a harassment adviser. Information about the full range of welfare services available through the University is provided on the main University website.
