Modern Languages and Linguistics

These courses provides both a practical linguistic training and an extensive introduction to many areas of European literature and thought. Modern Languages students study one or two languages over a four-year period, choosing from French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Modern Greek and Czech. Topics of study range from medieval poetry to contemporary novels and films. Students can build on their language skills during their third year abroad; most choose to work as Assistants in schools, while some get commercial jobs or follow university courses. For further details about the course see www.mod-langs.ox.ac.uk .

For more information on Modern Languages as part of a Joint School, please see English and Modern Languages, History and Modern Languages or Philosophy and Modern Languages.

Teaching at St Peter's

St Peter’s normally admits around 12 students to read Modern Languages (of whom up to four may be reading for Joint Schools). The College is situated close to the Taylorian and Modern Languages Faculty libraries. Its Fellows include specialists in French, German, Portuguese and Spanish; in addition, specialists in other languages hold appointments as St Peter’s College Lecturers. The College can therefore cater for any combination of the languages listed above.  Language classes with native speakers are held both within the College and in the Faculty.
