English
Oxford has the largest English faculty in Britain and exceptional libraries. The English Literature and Language course spans the whole of the history of the written language of English, from Anglo-Saxon epics to contemporary novelists. It includes literature in English from around the world. There are increasing opportunities for specialisation as the course progresses. The third year special author and special topic papers are nearly all assessed by extended essays. For further details see the English Faculty website.
Teaching at St Peter's
About ten students are admitted each year to study English. Weekly tutorials are generally complemented by a class for the whole college year-group. Beyond the syllabus, English students are notably active in college and University dramatic productions, journalism, creative writing and other literary activities. In recent years, St Peter’s students have organised a summer arts festival and the College offers an annual poetry prize.
English can also be studied as part of a joint degree, in conjunction with History or Modern Languages.
